Due to the terrain, there's no airport so a summer holiday to Alonnisos begins with a boat trip from Skiathos and you disembark at Patiri, the island's capital, a busy port in an attractive cove surrounded by dark green pine clad cliffs. The island is the 3rd largest of the North Sporades and is only 20km long and 5km wide. There's only one main road so you're more likely to see a donkey and cart than a car on an Alonnisos summer holiday but as long as you can get to the beaches of Aghios Dimitrios or Gerakas, does it matter?
