The older part of the village is full of old houses bedecked with beautiful flowers and after wandering around the narrow streets you can rest awhile in a pretty park next to the main square. The stand out building though, on a summer holiday to Fodele has to be the El Greco House and Museum. It is believed El Greco (1541-1614) was born and lived here before he emigrated to Spain and this antique little building holds a collection of reproductions of his work. If art is your bag, there’s plenty more to see on a summer holiday to Fodele.

The Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary has a multitude of fine frescoes and this small and highly important relic of the mid-Byzantine period is one of the cultural highlights of a Fodele summer holiday. Last on your tick list is the Monastery of Agios Penteleimon which you reach along a cypress lined road through orange groves. Built in the final years of the Venetian occupation of Crete, this is yet another example of a summer holiday to Fodele that takes you back to simpler yet harsher times when religion was of greater import than today.
