The only thing missing from this stunning location is the immediate proximity of a city beach but there are plenty of gorgeous beaches in both directions. The minor travelling distances in no way detract from the success of a Heraklion summer holiday as there are more than 30 in the municipality. The harbour is really a major port and stop off point for cruise ships but the medieval fortifications are a real sight and just one of the interesting cultural points of interest for including in your Heraklion summer holiday itinerary. Make sure you put at least one of the museums on your list – the Archaeological, Historical, Natural History or the Museum of the Battle of Crete.
