The place itself is the capital of the island and is set in a natural busy harbour used as the main port and also the bulk of the island’s fishing trade. Much of the seafood eaten in Argostoli summer holiday tavernas and restaurants is landed on the pretty quayside. At the east end of the bay is Koutavos Lagoon, a nature reserve that is a nesting site for the Loggerhead Turtle and many an Argostoli summer holidaymaker has spent a good few hours on the Drepano Causeway for a glimpse of these marvellous creatures.

A summer holiday to Argostoli doesn’t boast an immediate beach but that’s good thing. Kefalonia is overly blessed with glorious beaches, including Myrtos which was voted in the top five in the world in 2010. Hire a motorboat or go by bus but whichever, there’s more than enough for a different beach every day. A summer holiday to Argostoli is also the chance to visit the Historical and Cultural Museum, reputedly, one of the best in Greece.
