Even though only the fourth largest of the islands, thanks to volcanic eruptions as late as the 18th and 19th centuries, there are parts that have been described as lunar and Martian. A summer holiday to Lanzarote is the chance to visit the longest volcanic tunnel in the world, the 7km long Atlantida. Don't worry though, a summer holiday to Lanzarote isn't just restricted to viewing the landscape, as stunning it may be. Thereâ€™s a huge range of beaches, mostly black sand but if you're a traditionalist there's some beautiful white beaches to enjoy on a Lanzarote summer holiday like Playa Blanca and Papagayo. If you enjoy water sports, a summer holiday to Lanzarote is hugely appealing, particularly for wind powered activities. Las Cucharas on Costa Teguise is easily the best spot.
Lanzarote is a gorgeous island of beautiful low rise towns including capital Arrecife and varied, interesting attractions from the natural wonders of Timanfaya National Park and the Jameos del Agua cave systems to the House and Monument to the Farm Labourer, Guinate Tropical Park and Penguin Paradise and the Wine Museum. Lanzarote is home to the Canaries' largest aquarium and there's also the unique cactus garden created by artist Cesar Manrique.
