Inland the island is untouched by tourism and it's a land of mountains, lakes frequented by flamingos and the villages where Lemnos summer holiday visitors are always given a warm welcome. There are several important classical sites including Poliochni the most ancient Neolithic colonisation in the Aegean, plus Kastro, the impressive Venetian castle in the capital Myrina. On the north-east coast there's the small village of Panagia with the beaches of Agia and Sotiras close by. Some great swimming is to be had at Kotsinas and others worthy of mention are Varoskopos and Fanaraki. A summer holiday to Lemnos is the both epitome of a family friendly adventure and a romantic secluded get away from it all break for couples.
