There are a number of places that appeal but most head for a Meganissi summer holiday in Vathi, a picturesque village in a bay with a delightful harbour where lazy days are spent on the beach or waterside sipping local wines or chilled ouzo watching the comings and goings of the port. There's no rush on the island and no summer holiday to Meganissi is epitomised more than by the inland sleepy capital, Katomeri and then there's tiny Spartohori with its cobbled alleys and tiny tavernas high above the bay and gorgeous Spilia beach.

The best beaches for a Meganissi summer holiday are at Fanari, Ambelaki and Ai Yiannis and there are also plenty of other unspoiled and secluded coves. The Papanikolis sea caves are a sight not to be missed and you can get there by boat or hike through ancient olive groves. Alternatively, take a day trip from Vathi over to Lefkas to Kefalonia where life goes up a few notches on the pace-o-meter.
