Summer Holidays to Silves
Silves Sun Holidays Review and Guide
With a beautiful inland setting on the grand old River Arade, a summer holiday to Silves is a trip down the Algarve’s memory lane. Although the river is now silted up cutting off access to the sea, there are reminders everywhere that Portugal was a great seafaring nation and this was once a Moorish capital. A summer holiday to Silves is also the best of both worlds; a beautifully scenic countryside but not too far from the beach.
When you take a summer holiday to Silves you are truly spoiled with a beautiful historic town. The Castelo de Silves is the best preserved castle in the Algarve and the Cathedral is next door so no need to travel far for two magnificent sights. Walk the castle battlements with its eleven towers and enjoy the amazing view of the town. The cathedral is a gothic delight with ancient tombs and you can walk a network of narrow streets down to the town. Other attractions of cultural interest to visit on a Silves summer holiday is the 3m high 16th century Cross of Portugal and the Archaeological Museum. The social life of the town is focussed on the Praça do Municipio, typically pretty with palms and flowers.
There’s no real need to visit the nearby beaches everyday on a Silves summer holiday as the town boasts a very fine swimming pool but if you venture beyond, all of the attractions of The Algarve coast are within easy reach. For a real Portuguese experience, take a summer holiday to Silves.
