It's hard to dispute the sheer magnificent beauty of this Greek island and it enters the heart of everyone who takes a summer holiday to Santorini. The island is a favourite destination for weddings and honeymoons thanks to the idyllic aspect of the little white block houses with blue doors and shutters half hidden by bougainvillea, the ruddy black cliffs of the volcanic caldera that rise from the shimmering blue sea and the beautiful beaches and coves. A Santorini summer holiday is full of romance. The stepped cobbled streets in villages like Fira (aka Thira) are just begging to be climbed, the archaeological wonders of Akroti are demanding to take you back to simpler times and one of the lasting memories of a Santorini summer holiday has to be the sight of Oia as it changes colour during the sunset. Take a boat trip to the volcano and hot springs that ends at Oia then climb 272 steps up into the village. Not for the faint hearted but it's worth it. Fira is actually a pretty cool place to spend a Santorini summer holiday. Even if you choose a different resort you'll probably end up in Fira at some point. The views are stupendous, the shopping is excellent and the nightlife terrific but Santorini summer holidays spent in Kamari, Perivolos and Perissa also have their own merits.
